
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 34

Requesting the Commissioner of the West Virginia Division of
Highways to name that certain portion of State Route 44
between Logan and U.S. Route 52 in Mingo County the "Jerry
West Highway."
Whereas, Jerry West, the son of a coal miner, is a native of
West Virginia; and
Whereas, Jerry West led East Bank High School to the 1956 West
Virginia state basketball tournament; and
Whereas, Jerry West was twice named to All-American basketball
teams while attending West Virginia University; and
Whereas, Jerry West was the first overall pick by the
Minneapolis Lakers (soon to be Los Angeles Lakers) in the 1960 NBA
draft; and
Whereas, Jerry "Mr. Clutch" West can list, among his
accomplishments, the following:
Participated in 18 NBA All-Star Games (1970-72, 1974-77, 1979-
89)
Ten-time All-NBA First Team (1970-72, 1974-77, 1979-89)
NBA Finals Most Valuable Player (1969)
Four-time NBA All-Defensive First Team (1970-73)
NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player (1972)
Elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame
(1979)
Whereas, Jerry (No. 44) West, still holds records for most
single-season free throws made (840), most playoff free throws made
(1,213), the single-series playoff record for highest points per
game average (46.3ppg) and he is the Los Angeles Lakers all-time
leading scorer (25,192); and
Whereas, Jerry West, having become the Lakers' general manager
in 1982, was named the NBA Executive of the Year for 1995; and
Whereas, Jerry West is a living example of what West Virginia
and West Virginians can produce; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Commission of the West Virginia Division of Highways
is hereby requested to designate that certain portion of State
Route 44 between Logan and U. S. Route 52 in Mingo County the
"Jerry West Highway"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Commissioner is requested to have
made and placed, at either end of that portion of State Route 44,
signs identifying the roadway as the "Jerry West Highway"; and, be
it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates is
hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the
Commissioner of the Division of Highways, the Governor of West Virginia and Mr. Jerry West, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles, CA.
